THE LOCATION
Babcock
State Park, located on Rt. 41 at Clifftop is 4,100 acres
of rugged and beautiful forest and will be the site for this exciting
new trail run. Glade and Mann’s Creek both flow through
the park, and have carved deep canyons in the Sandstone in their
plunge (literally!) to the New River Gorge.
There
are many hiking and mountain bike trails in the park, and a small
lake. There is also horseback riding, cabins, camping, a pool;
all available during the prime season from mid-April until the
end of October. The park is rich in history as well as beauty.
One of the “old parks” in the state, many of the buildings
and walls are made from cut sandstone. The “ infamous”
Gristmill on Glade Creek is actually constructed from several
old mills from West Virginia. The Park is also the site of a trail
running race- the
Gristmill Grinder, a half-marathon trail race on April 29th, 2006.
The “Grinder “is part of the West
Virginia Mountain Trail Series.
